Napa Earthquake Breaks Glass, Not Our Will.

Our friends over at City Winery Napa faced a few obstacles recently after the Napa earthquake, but they’re determined to keep their spirits high as they clean up the debris. We wanted to share an update of what’s going on with our West Coast family while they deal with the damage caused by the earthquake. See below:

The 6.1 earthquake that shook Napa yesterday broke hundreds of Riedel glasses, over ten thousand dollars in our wine cellar, among other minor damage, but the historic Napa Valley Opera House stood strong while neighboring buildings did not do as well.  With several cracks in the walls and a water leak that poured 3 inches of water across our entire restaurant floor took almost the entire day to clean up, we still feel lucky that no staff or friends where injured, and that this is all the damage we incurred.  We are drying out the floor which hopefully will not warp and drying out our eyes from all the rare California Wine from our list that fell and broke, but our will to open as soon as possible is strong.  Last nights show was cancelled, and we are waiting to hear from the building department in Napa if they confirm our determination that our occupancy is safe.  Stay tuned for tonight.  Below are three pictures from our mess:

September Highlights at City Winery

Summer may be coming to an end, but the opportunities to see live music at City Winery show no sign of slowing up! September kicks off with a Labor Day party on our patio, followed by a wide variety of musical acts and wine events, including some very well known artists, worldly music and dance, and even a tribute to the great Elvis Costello!

On Labor Day, Monday, September 1, we’re excited for our 3rd annual Bubbly Q presented by Chicago Reader and Chandon! We’ll have a whole roast pig and live music from Fruition, Old Salt Union, and The Way Down Wanderers- all on our patio! Tickets are only $15 and include live music and a split of bubbly!

Immediately following Labor Day is a very exciting 4 nights of seminal punk band X. Each night they’ll perform a different album (Los Angeles, Wild Gift, Under The Big Black Sun, & More Fun In The New World). John Doe put on a great show earlier this summer, so we are thrilled to have him with his full band for four consecutive nights! Later in September, multi award-winning and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Macy Gray will be here for two nights. Her new album comes out in October, so she may preview some new music- who knows?

Here at City Winery we try our hardest to bring in worldly music and events, and September boasts several worldly events worth attending. Whether you choose to attend the Yalumba Winery dinner on 9/3 (Australia), the Wines of Provence tasting on 9/4 (France), the World Music Festival on 9/15 (Morocco, Tunisia), An Afternoon of Flamenco on 9/21 (Spain), or all four, we’ll broaden your horizons and expose you to the beautiful food, wine, music, and dance of countries all over the world!

On 9/30 we’re excited to wrap up the month of September with an evening of songs by Elvis Costello, performed on the piano by Steve Nieve, Costello’s keyboardist of over 30 years! Steve will play solo piano reinterpretations of Elvis’s best songs- and they will be nothing short of incredible!

City Winery Chicago named Top Winery in Illinois

Being a winery, or any establishment for that matter, it’s easy to be recognized and noticed locally. To gain recognition and praise nationally, however, is an entirely different story! Last month,, TripAdvisor‘s vacation rental site, used industry research and traveler feedback to compile a list of the 50 top wineries and breweries worth traveling for, selecting one per state- and City Winery Chicago was listed as the top winery in Illinois!

This award from could not be more timely as we recently received the prestigious Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, which was given to only 35 Chicago restaurants.  Check out our extensive list of wines including ones we make on site here in the windy city.

We hope to share our brand and provide the City Winery experience for more than just locals, but people traveling nationally and internationally as well. We are both honored and thrilled to be on this list and cannot wait to welcome the new guests who will come because of it. Check out the full list here and share with your friends!
