James McMurtry Cellar Session and 4.2 Show!

FINAL Cellar Session

Singer-songwriter James McMurtry tours year round and consistently throws down unparalleled powerhouse performances. The Washington Post notes: “Much attention is paid to James McMurtry’s lyrics and rightfully so: He creates a novel’s worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets. What gets overlooked, however, is that he’s an accomplished rock guitar player … serious stuff, imparted by a singularly serious band.” Check out this intimate performance of his song “Down Across The Delaware” and then see him live next Sunday (4.2)! Tickets may already be sold out, but the waitlist is still available!

Poi Dog Pondering Cellar Session and 3.24, 3.25 Show!

FINAL Cellar Session

Poi Dog Pondering keeps thriving because their ethic has always been about following their musical heart. Their steadfast independence has allowed them to perennially bloom. PDP have ripened into staunchly independent musical voyagers. They have let every sound that excited them flow through their music and flood it with ever changing colors: orchestral, acoustic, and electronic textures. Last year, they stopped by City Winery for a Cellar Session, where they performed their song “Angelika Suspended”. Check out the video below and see them this weekend on Friday (3.24) or Saturday (3.25)!

Living Colour Cellar Session and 3.13 Show!

FINAL Cellar Session

Rock band Living Colour sat down with us last summer to perform their song “Middle Man” for their Cellar Session. Living Colour rose to fame with their debut album Vivid in 1988. Stylistically, the band’s music is a creative fusion influenced by heavy metal, funk, hard rock, free jazz, hardcore punk, and hip-hop. Although the band scored a number of hits, they are best remembered for their anthemic single “Cult of Personality,” which won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1989, and their highest charting single “Type.” Check out the video below and see them live TONIGHT at 8PM!

On International Women’s Day, we celebrate Alice Houël – our new assistant winemaker!

Meet winemaker Alice Houël, the latest addition to City Winery NYC! In celebration of International Women’s Day, Alice took the time to give us a unique glimpse into her perspective as a woman in winemaking. City Winery CEO Michael Dorf says, “A balanced blend is not only a valued characteristic in wines– the workplace also demands a balanced blend. We pride ourselves on the integral role women have at City Winery.” Alice embodies the power of passion and determination of a great role model, and we are lucky to have her!

A native of France, Alice began her career in Champagne before working at Cape Mentelle Vineyards in Australia. She attributes her love of wine to these experiences and describes these formative years as “very important and fulfilling.”

Today, Alice does not let the male-dominated aspect of the industry discourage her or hold her back. “We are just winemakers, and I guess we happen to be female,” she told us. Alice wants other women to focus on their passion above all else. “If you have a passion for wine, do not hesitate to study in the field and start a career. Remember just do what you like, be happy with your job, and keep a good work/life balance.” While she acknowledges the hurdles women winemakers may face, she addresses it with optimism. “It is still a male-dominated field, but there are more and more females making wine. It is probably much better for me than a few decades before!”

If women do encounter workplace challenges, Alice advises, “Do not stop because you may have obstacles! Maybe the place you work is not one that supports women enough, but there are wineries out there where women are encouraged and promoted to high positions.”
