We were so happy to have Aly Bockler from WCIU You & Me This Morning visit us during our second crush on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, when we received 10 tons of Pinot Noir grapes! In their video they capture how grapes turn into wine! If you’re interested in volunteering for a crush and learning more about the wine process, please email: James@CityWinery.com or call 312.733.WINE (9463).
Last Tuesday, September 8, was the second crush of the season for us here at City Winery Chicago. If you’re wondering what a crush is, it is the beginning of the process to creating your favorite wine! The 10 tons of grapes we received were Pinot Noir and they came straight from California on a truck around 6 a.m. and we got to unload them and put them through the “destemmer” machine which does exactly what you would think: it separates the grapes themselves from the stems.
After the grapes go through the destemmer they are passed on a conveyer belt where employees extract leaves, twigs, rocks, (sometimes even snails!) from the grapes. It may seem like a simple job, but it requires more people than you think. There can be anywhere from four to eight people working on this station just to be sure that all that is left and going into your future glass of wine is grapes.
Once the grapes pass through this step, they then roll off the conveyer belt and into a giant tub that will soon be put on a forklift which will then be poured into a tank where the grapes will ferment. They will remain in these tanks for about 7-10 days and then they will be well on their way to being put into your glass! Check out our winemaker, Robert Kowal (@cwvinewhisperer), using his masterful forklift skills to get the destemmed grapes into the fermenting tanks: Robert Kowal, City Winery Chicago winemaker
The next round of grapes will arrive from California! We will getting some Chardonnay and Syrah grapes from the Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino regions.
So, next time you have a glass of wine you will know a little more about just how many people it took to make it!

On 9/16 we are changing up the scenery with a music photography exhibition of two great photographers, Henry Diltz and Pattie Boyd, who will pair their amazing stories and iconic images of music history together for an unforgettable presentation of their tour Behind the Lens. The Behind the Lens tour is a live presentation of the artists themselves as they share their stories with each photograph, including Pattie Boyd’s intimate and revealing photographs of George Harrison and the Beatles and Eric Clapton among others. Morrison Hotel Gallery will also create a gallery exhibition and sale to travel with each show, sharing these extraordinary images with audiences nationwide!

We’re starting off the month with a huge celebration of Bob Weir and 50 years of Grateful Dead with Weir World: 6 days full of shows and events coinciding with the Grateful Dead concerts at Soldier field. On 6/30, 7/1 and 7/2, come out and see Jonathan Wilson and friends for a show with music, interviews and insights.
On 7/3, 7/4 and 7/5, we will be hosting a LIVE stream from Soldier Field of all the Grateful Dead shows. So if you weren’t able to grab tickets for the show, come join to watch the whole thing from the comfort of our concert venue! All shows will start at 7PM.
We will also be hosting shows throughout the week around the Grateful Dead shows to keep the celebration going. Steve Kimock and Jerry Joseph will play on 7/3 and 7/4 at Noon, Matisyahu and Friends on 7/4 at midnight and Railroad Earth on 7/5 at midnight. And don’t forget about Joan Osborne’s brunch show at 12PM on 7/5. All tickets for these shows can be found on our website or HERE on this dedicated site.
Post Weir World, there are still plenty of great shows to see, starting with the Bacon Brothers with Freedy Johnson on 7/6! Outside of both of their highly successful careers, Kevin and Michael have decided to share their talent and pursue their love for music. This will definitely be a fun one, so don’t miss it!
Later that week, Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde will here on 7/9! We’re so excited to finally have her here after a reschedule back in March. Then, on 7/14, Paris Combo is here to perform songs of their fifth album, 5. The quintet plays a great mixture of jazz, French pop, cabaret, gypsy, Latino and Middle Eastern music. There’s something for everyone to love at this show.
Guitarist and songwriter Shuggie Otis will be at City Winery for a 10:30PM show on 7/17. And later that weekend, Ray Wylie Hubbard performs with The Grahams on 7/19. Hubbard is an Americana favorite, and will be playing tunes from both his past albums and The Ruffian’s Misfortune, which was out earlier this year.
Five-time Grammy winner Marty Stuart will be at City Winery with his Fabulous Superlatives on 7/22 along with Sam Lewis! This country star has been making music for more than four decades, and he’s still ready to put on a great show every night.
Legendary 70’s punk group X will be playing a three night stay at City Winery on 7/26, 7/27, & 7/28. All original members of the group will be playing the shows. And, like last time they were here, these shows will sell out.
Three-time Grammy winner Delbert McClinton will be rounding out the month with his show on 7/29. He’ll be here to play songs off his 28th (wow!) studio album, Blind, Crippled and Crazy, along a lifetime of other work. What great way to end the month.
As always, we have our wine events throughout the month as well. The first event for wine lovers new and old will be on 7/09. City Winery Chicago officially opened it’s Riverwalk location this past Friday, June 12. The newest City Winery location, on 11 W. Riverwalk South, is located on the newly renovated Marina Plaza between State and Dearborn streets.
The Riverwalk location will be open 11am-9pm daily (weather permitting), and has over 100 seats looking out over the Chicago River. There will also be an indoor space reserved for private parties. Also, anyone looking to stop by on their boat is welcome to dock in front with our friends at Downtown Docks and come ashore to wine and dine!
The Riverwalk menu features some of the most popular salads, sandwiches and soups from City Winery Chicago’s distinctive small-plates sharing-and-pairing concept menu, plus some new items unique to the Riverwalk, including family-friendly options. City Winery Chicago at the Riverwalk will feature six house-made wines – sourced from vineyards in California, Oregon, Washington, Argentina and Chile – on tap, in addition to bottles of bubbly, Goose Island beer and a selection of seasonal cocktails. City Winery Chicago has designated a “Riverwalk Red” (blend) that will be available all summer long.
The Marina Plaza that City Winery opened in is just a part of the revamp of the Riverwalk. The complete renovation of the Riverwalk, being done by the Chicago Department of Transportation, is planned to stretch the pedestrian walkway from Michigan Avenue to Lake Street.
Everyone at City Winery is really excited to bring a “best of” experience to everyone in the heart of downtown! For more information, check out our Riverwalk website here.
Together with Revolutions Per Minute, City Winery Chicago is hosting the Help Rebuild Nepal Benefit Concert to help those affected by the recent devastating earthquakes in Nepal. The event will feature local Chicago artists who are passionate about the cause, and will be with us to play a great show!
Artists performing include: Lynne Jordan, Wayne Baker Brooks, The Empty Pockets, Rick King’s Royal Hustle and Nicholas Barron.
Soulful songstress Lynne Jordan has been performing around Chicago and the world for more than a decade both as a solo performer and the front woman for The Shivers, a 12-piece band. Her voice and stage presence are not something you’ll want to miss.
Wayne Baker Brooks, the son of Lonnie Brooks, is a legendary blues guitarist from right here in Chicago. His work has been described as boundary-breaking blues, something that will definitely come across as he performs with his band at the benefit.
Another blues artist to look for at the benefit is @Rick King’s Royal Hustle. This group, founded by drummer Rick King, is a funk, blues and soul combo band that King founded after working with his first group, Lubriphonic.
If rootsy-Americana rock ‘n roll music with a touch of Motown soul is more your style, The Empty Pockets will be a highlight of the evening. This group of charismatic performers will grab your attention from beginning to end.
Last but not least is Nicholas Barron, a folk and blues musician who also has quite a knack for painting. Barron has had an incredible story to tell and art to see. There’s no better way to sample the best of both his talents by coming to see him at the benefit (and checking out his painting hanging in our dining room).
In order to see all of these amazing artists, and help give back to a community greatly in need, all you need to do is come see us 6.16 for the Help Nepal Benefit! Tickets are only $25 and net proceeds will benefit Revolutions Per Minute’s When Disaster Strikes Fund.

Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell have been singing together for 25 years. And they’ve talked about making a record together for just as long. In summer 2014 an extraordinarily successful Kickstarter campaign raised the initial goal of $40,000 in 24 hours, going on to ultimately reach over $85,000, to bring that desire to fruition under the band name “The Pine Hill Project.”
“Tomorrow You’re Going,” an Americana masterwork of great songs, gorgeous harmonies, and stunning production was released in March of this year. The album is at turns meditative, joyful, rollicking, and deeply moving, and a one of a kind musical event.
We are incredibly excited to have these two here at City Winery Chicago to experience what happens when they join forces. Their show on June 12 is sure to showcase all of their folk and Americana style, and this duo is definitely ready to share their music with you.
