Halloween Shows at City Winery Chicago

City Winery Chicago announces a trio of Halloween shows fitting for the Halloween season. Edgar Winter, whose Top 40 hit “Frankenstein” is a staple of any Halloween party, plays a full band show on October 20. The weekend prior to Halloween, Amy Lowe and KingKatz play a Halloween-themed kids’ matinee on October 24. And on Halloween proper, The Meters’ Leo Nocentelli and P-Funk’s Bernie Worrell play a funky show as The Meters Experience.

The Edgar Winter Band will be playing on  Tuesday, October 20. Iconic Texas rock, jazz, blues and pop multi-instrumentalist Edgar Winter (“Free Ride,” “Frankenstein”) is renowned for his own scintillating shows and his riveting collaborations with the likes of Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. Winter invented the keyboard body strap which allows him the freedom to move around the stage during his high-energy performances.

The Kids’ Concert Series – Stomp Your Feet to the Jammin’ Beat “Halloween Harvest” is happening on Saturday, October 24. Environmental awareness, neighborhood diversity and the ability of everyone to make his or her own music are just a few of the themes covered in this lively entertaining program of songs and stories for children and all ages. Selections from Parents Choice Award-winning CD’s I Like Gum and Brighter Than Fireflies encourage the audience to clap their hands, stomp their feet and sing along to the jammin beats with Amy Lowe and guitar & drum duo KingKatz (Dave Katzman and Mike Rodbard).

The Meters Experience Halloween Extravaganza is occuring on  Saturday, October 31 at 9pm (aka Halloween night!) In the ’60s and ’70s, founding fathers of funk, The Meters, created a unique sound blending funk, blues and dance grooves with a New Orleans vibe. After world tours with The Rolling Stones, the original Meters have been on since hiatus since 2006, but Leo Nocentelli, guitarist and founding member of the original Meters, carries the musical sound on with The Meters Experience, performing such classic hits as “Cissy Strut,” “Fire on the Bayou,” “Hey Pocky A-Way” and “Look-Ka Py Py.” He’s joined by keyboardist and composer Bernie Worrell, founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

WCIU City Winery Chicago Crush Segment

We were so happy to have Aly Bockler from WCIU You & Me This Morning visit us during our second crush on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, when we received 10 tons of Pinot Noir grapes! In their video they capture how grapes turn into wine!  If you’re interested in volunteering for a crush and learning more about the wine process, please email: James@CityWinery.com or call 312.733.WINE (9463).

City Winery Chicago Second Crush of 2015

Chicago Second Crush 2015

Workers loading up grapes to be destemmed.

Last Tuesday, September 8, was the second crush of the season for us here at City Winery Chicago. If you’re wondering what a crush is, it is the beginning of the process to creating your favorite wine! The 10 tons of grapes we received were Pinot Noir and they came straight from California on a truck around 6 a.m. and we got to unload them and put them through the “destemmer” machine which does exactly what you would think: it separates the grapes themselves from the stems.

After the grapes go through the destemmer they are passed on a conveyer belt where employees extract leaves, twigs, rocks, (sometimes even snails!) from the grapes. It may seem like a simple job, but it requires more people than you think. There can be anywhere from four to eight people working on this station just to be sure that all that is left and going into your future glass of wine is grapes.

Once the grapes pass through this step, they then roll off the conveyer belt and into a giant tub that will soon be put on a forklift which will then be poured into a tank where the grapes will ferment. They will remain in these tanks for about 7-10 days and then they will be well on their way to being put into your glass! Check out our winemaker, Robert Kowal (@cwvinewhisperer), using his masterful forklift skills to get the destemmed grapes into the fermenting tanks: Robert Kowal, City Winery Chicago winemaker

The next round of grapes will arrive from California! We will getting some Chardonnay and Syrah grapes from the Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino regions.

So, next time you have a glass of wine you will know a little more about just how many people it took to make it!

And check out our upcoming wine events if you’re interested in sharpening your palate!

City Winery Chicago’s Summer 2015 Vinofile Party Recap

image3
City Winery kicked off June with yet another VinoFile Party. Although weather ended up keeping us indoors, we nevertheless celebrated the evening with style, using the lobby, winery, Barrel Room and the restaurant for an exclusive VinoFile bash. For our second VinoFile party of the year, we wanted to celebrate the arrival of our new VinoFile tiers – Silver and Gold. While all of our VinoFiles are aware of the perks of their membership, several members decided to up their membership to one of the new packages for one very good reason – WINE CLUB! Both Silver and Gold tiers introduce a first for City Winery Chicago – a chance for people to subscribe to our wines and take home bottles – including favorites that they’ve had here at City Winery, plus options that are exclusive to the wine club. Winemaker Robert Kowal was on hand to talk about his selections for the inaugural offering, plus what’s in store for the next chapter coming at the end of fall! Chef Andres Barrera and Pastry Chef Angelica Rangel were also on hand to charm the crowd (and receive credit for their own tasty offerings to the party)!
our lovely pasty chef Angelica Rangel

our lovely pasty chef Angelica Rangel

If you’re worried that you missed out, fear not – memberships are retroactive, so guests wanting to sign up for our new VinoFile tiers can still receive their Wine Club offerings. And those bummed about not being at this party can take heart – another will be coming in the fall and winter! If you’re curious about joining the VinoFile program – or interesting in upgrading to the wine club selections available in Silver or Gold – just click here for details!

We hope to see you at the next party – you bring a guest, and we’ll bring the wine!

July 2015 Events at City Winery Chicago

newsletter_banner

Summer is in full swing, and City Winery Chicago’s July calendar is chock-full of shows and events you don’t want to miss!

We’re starting off the month with a huge celebration of Bob Weir and 50 years of Grateful Dead with Weir World: 6 days full of shows and events coinciding with the Grateful Dead concerts at Soldier field. On 6/30, 7/1 and 7/2, come out and see Jonathan Wilson and friends for a show with music, interviews and insights.

On 7/3, 7/4 and 7/5, we will be hosting a LIVE stream from Soldier Field of all the Grateful Dead shows. So if you weren’t able to grab tickets for the show, come join to watch the whole thing from the comfort of our concert venue! All shows will start at 7PM.

We will also be hosting shows throughout the week around the Grateful Dead shows to keep the celebration going. Steve Kimock and Jerry Joseph will play on 7/3 and 7/4 at Noon, Matisyahu and Friends on 7/4 at midnight and Railroad Earth on 7/5 at midnight. And don’t forget about Joan Osborne’s brunch show at 12PM on 7/5. All tickets for these shows can be found on our website or HERE on this dedicated site.

Post Weir World, there are still plenty of great shows to see, starting with the Bacon Brothers with Freedy Johnson on 7/6! Outside of both of their highly successful careers, Kevin and Michael have decided to share their talent and pursue their love for music. This will definitely be a fun one, so don’t miss it!

Later that week, Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde will here on 7/9! We’re so excited to finally have her here after a reschedule back in March. Then, on 7/14, Paris Combo is here to perform songs of their fifth album, 5. The quintet plays a great mixture of jazz, French pop, cabaret, gypsy, Latino and Middle Eastern music. There’s something for everyone to love at this show.

Guitarist and songwriter Shuggie Otis will be at City Winery for a 10:30PM show on 7/17. And later that weekend, Ray Wylie Hubbard performs with The Grahams on 7/19. Hubbard is an Americana favorite, and will be playing tunes from both his past albums and The Ruffian’s Misfortune, which was out earlier this year.

Five-time Grammy winner Marty Stuart will be at City Winery with his Fabulous Superlatives on 7/22 along with Sam Lewis! This country star has been making music for more than four decades, and he’s still ready to put on a great show every night.

Legendary 70’s punk group X will be playing a three night stay at City Winery on 7/26, 7/27, & 7/28. All original members of the group will be playing the shows. And, like last time they were here, these shows will sell out.

Three-time Grammy winner Delbert McClinton will be rounding out the month with his show on 7/29. He’ll be here to play songs off his 28th (wow!) studio album, Blind, Crippled and Crazy, along a lifetime of other work. What great way to end the month.

As always, we have our wine events throughout the month as well. The first event for wine lovers new and old will be on 7/09. The Wines of South America Dinner with Master Sommelier Evan Goldstein will start at 7PM and feature a three-course dinner paired with wines from Argentina, Brazil and Chile.

City Winery Wine School will be hosting the first of their summer series events the following week on 7/15. This grapes class features Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Syrah.

To round out the month, City Winery will be hosting Stag’s Leap Wine Cellar dinner on 7/30. The three-course dinner will feature wines from the wine cellar in Napa Valley, and guidance from Chris Smarto of Stag’s Leap!

Don’t miss out on your chance to come out to any of the events City Winery has going on this July!
