On International Women’s Day, we celebrate Alice Houël – our new assistant winemaker!

Meet winemaker Alice Houël, the latest addition to City Winery NYC! In celebration of International Women’s Day, Alice took the time to give us a unique glimpse into her perspective as a woman in winemaking. City Winery CEO Michael Dorf says, “A balanced blend is not only a valued characteristic in wines– the workplace also demands a balanced blend. We pride ourselves on the integral role women have at City Winery.” Alice embodies the power of passion and determination of a great role model, and we are lucky to have her!

A native of France, Alice began her career in Champagne before working at Cape Mentelle Vineyards in Australia. She attributes her love of wine to these experiences and describes these formative years as “very important and fulfilling.”

Today, Alice does not let the male-dominated aspect of the industry discourage her or hold her back. “We are just winemakers, and I guess we happen to be female,” she told us. Alice wants other women to focus on their passion above all else. “If you have a passion for wine, do not hesitate to study in the field and start a career. Remember just do what you like, be happy with your job, and keep a good work/life balance.” While she acknowledges the hurdles women winemakers may face, she addresses it with optimism. “It is still a male-dominated field, but there are more and more females making wine. It is probably much better for me than a few decades before!”

If women do encounter workplace challenges, Alice advises, “Do not stop because you may have obstacles! Maybe the place you work is not one that supports women enough, but there are wineries out there where women are encouraged and promoted to high positions.”

City Winery is proud to support these great fundraisers! Benefits for Church Street School & The Women’s March (photos)

City Winery is always thrilled to have the opportunity to support local organizations and national causes. Over the past few weeks, we’ve hosted two important fundraisers.

On January 4th, neighbors and supporters of The Church Street School for Music & Art came together to help the school raise crucial funds. Organized by City Winery CEO and Tribeca resident, the benefit concert featured appearances by Jennifer Nettles, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Ed Burns and more. $100,000 was raised to help keep the school open. The Church Street school is also a beneficiary of Dorf’s “Music Of” series.

Then, on January 15th, we hosted a fundraiser for NYC Supports the Women’s March on Washington. In collaboration with City Winery, the concert was organized by Karen Waltuch and the official local New York City Chapter of the Women’s March on Washington (WMW) and 100% of the net proceeds from the event was donated to directly to support the Women’s March on Washington. The concert featured performances by a multi-cultural lineup of NYC artists, including Yo La Tengo Mazz Swift, Ani Cordero, Larkin Grimm & Anais Maviel, Arooj Aftab and Charlotte Greve, Felice Rosser’s Faith, Pyeng Threadgill & Derek Neivergelt, Elena Moon Park, Sonia De Los Santos, and members of LADAMA, Camila Meza, Leni Stern and Kyp Malone. In addition, a sign making workshop was hosted during the afternoon.

City Winery NYC 2016 Concert Highlights

Mary Chapin Carpenter & Melissa Etheridge

We finally had the opportunity to bring Melissa and Mary Chapin to the room in a special co-bill performance last January. Definitely one for the books. Hope to have them both back for headline plays very soon.

Marc Roberge (of OAR)

The lead vocalist of American rock band OAR performed a two intimate sets in our room earlier this year. Emotions were through the roof as Roberge performed solo acoustic sets. The show was a real tear jerker according to Instagram. We can’t wait to have him back next year!

Allen Stone

An intimate night with Allen Stone performing his favorite tunes that date back to his early career as a troubadour of sorts, playing coffee shops and traveling telling stories. Great energy filled the room for both the early and late shows and was a notable highlight of 2016.

Patty Griffin

Grammy Award winning artist Patty Griffin delivered two incredible, sold out shows over Halloween this year. Joining her on stage was Joan Shelley and together these two amazing talents captivated a packed room each evening.

Lucinda Williams

One of America’s finest female singer/songwriters Lucinda Williams released her 12th studio album earlier this year and we had the honor of hosting her for five nights in support of The Ghosts of Highway 20. This album is a follow-up to her 2014 effort, Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone; her first ever double studio album which was jam-packed with her own original material.

Amanda Palmer & Jherek Bischoff

It was an emotional night as Amanda Palmer & Jherek Bischoff teamed up to perform Strung Out in Heaven: A Bowie String Quartet shortly after the legend himself passed away in January this year.

Amanda Palmer 032916-Al Pereira (32)

The Head & The Heart (WFUV Show)

It was an incredible treat to host The Head & The Heart for an exclusive WFUV & VinoFile underplay show last September. The band covered songs from their latest album before being joined on stage by one of our favorite radio hosts, Rita Houston for an interview.

Justin Hayward (of The Moody Blues)

The Moody Blues vocalist and lead guitarist showed no signs of slowing down at the age of 68 as he performed songs from his latest album and hits of the past. Some fans may have had reservations about a stripped down version of their favorite Moody Blues songs, but Hayward managed to capture their musical complexity providing incredible depth and a provocative performance.

Skull Juice Live w/ Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Andy Dick & Louis CK

City Winery New York was honored to host an all-star lineup of renowned comedians last summer. Fans packed the house last August to witness a rare reading of a comedy pilot that never actually made it to the screen. This special night that had the crowd roaring the entire evening with a surprise guest appearance from Louis CK.

GZA the Genius, co-founder of one of hip hop’s most influential groups, graced our stage to perform Liquid Swords in its entirety this fall. The room was elated as he performed tracks from this 90’s classic album mixed in with Wu-Tang classics, and even payed homage to the late ODB with Shimmy Shimmy Ya, which was a crowd pleaser. The response was so great that we added a second night with another packed house.
