City Winery Named 2018 Oregon Wine A-List Award Wine Program Winner

The votes have been cast, the results have been tallied, and City Winery Restaurant Group has emerged the winner of the 2018 Oregon Wine A-List Wine Program of the Year!

The Wine Program of the Year winner sets a standard of excellence for an Oregon wine restaurant program with its depth and breadth of Oregon selections, participation in Oregon Wine Month, and educational opportunities for staff and clientele alike. City Winery exemplifies these qualifiers as it has a well-curated, diverse selection of producers and both traditional and uncommon varieties of Oregon wines. They also host numerous Oregon wine events and make a house wine from Oregon grapes, which helps to increase visibility of the state on their house wine list, all done on a large scale.

Says Oregon Wine Board president Tom Danowski, “The fantastic thing about our A-List restaurant program is that it shines a light on some of the world’s most passionate advocates for Oregon—the fine wine directors and restaurateurs—who go out of their way to showcase Oregon wines on their lists. We feel they should be rewarded for introducing more Oregon wines in the country’s top markets and we want to say thank you for the support.”

With five locations—ChicagoBostonNYCAtlanta and Nashville—City Winery is headed by founder and CEO Michael Dorf and is a fully functioning winery (the first in NYC) and fine dining establishment hosting concerts, food and wine classes, and private events. Dorf and City Winery’s national wine director Rachel Driver Speckan are particularly pleased about the designation of City Winery as 2018 Oregon Wine A-List Program of the Year. “Both Rachel and I are so delighted with this honor,” said Dorf. “Putting on a wide variety of Oregon wines with the deep terroir differences between winemaking areas of the state, and showcasing all the delicious flavors Pinot noir has to offer, make our wine lists sing. We love turning our customers on to what we feel is the most exciting wine region in America.”

The Oregon Wine A-List Awards program is a partnership between Oregon Wine Press and Oregon Wine Board. It was founded in 2015 to recognize restaurants around the world that display deep appreciation, enthusiasm and support for Oregon wines as seen in the diversity of regions and varieties on their wine lists. My Friend: Jean-Luc Le Dû

I’m still in disbelief that Jean Luc is gone, he just asked me for tickets for our Led Zeppelin show at Carnegie. Jean-Luc was one of the first true counsels helping me rationalize the concept of City Winery. I walked into his store in 2006 knowing the great sommelier from Daniel was teaching intimate classes in the back, so I took a few, hoping to both meet some potential investors for my new concept and learn more about wine. After the second or third seminar, I approached Monsier Le Du timidly if he had a few minutes to talk about an idea, when he asked me “if I was the same Michael Dorf from the Knitting Factory.” Before I said, “Well yes,” he started rattling off shows he had seen, lineups of bands from Sonic Youth to J Mascis, that I could not remember. His passion for music and depth of being a deep rock-and-roll fan were beyond me—perhaps intimidating. Within 10 minutes he invited me to dinner and we went off swapping stories. I traded him some good old Knit stories for some tidbits of wine knowledge. Over the years we became close friends, and along with mutual friend Bob Gruen attended many a concert and tasting together. Eventually, I proposed the idea of the Bob Gruen and Jean-Luc Le Du wine pairing, taking Bob’s iconic photos and Jean-Luc’s articulate wit to connect the appropriate wine with the photo. We premiered it for our management team at one of our offsite meetings. We then did it for the public and another adventure started. The countless bottles of wines shared and storytelling around a glass will be so missed. It does not seem right that he is gone, he is younger than I, had such energy and zest for life, it makes no sense. He was a French Mensch. Cannot understand. You are already missed pal!! -Michael DorfJean-Luc Le Du 3

Support Hurricane Relief Efforts in Puerto Rico w/ City Winery

Puerto Rico_rotator

On January 29, City Winery’s sending 125 of our management to Puerto Rico, spending two days in the middle of the island, where we’ll work with farmers to rebuild their property. This includes planting seeds, removing debris, and rebuilding barns, sheds, and farms. Hurricane Maria took a horrific toll and decimated the agricultural industry, which normally acts as the main food supplier for the island.

Chef Cuevas of Restaurant 1919 and the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel acts as the leader in the farm to table movement in Puerto Rico and is collaborating with City Winery to help those in need.

The City Winery employees will be making the trip with duffle bags filled with supplies. Thanks to American Airlines, who will be waiving the excess baggage fees, the company will be able to bring necessities including ground coffee, shovels, extension cords, dehydrated milk, and much more.

To supplement the rebuilding efforts, City Winery will be leveraging its extensive customer-facing business with a campaign to help raise additional funds, allowing the company to bring much needed cash down for distribution directly to the farming and food-creating community.

With over 300,000 email subscribers and a strong social media presence, the 125 managers participating – separately from the campaign – are striving to raise over $250,000 between now and their departure.

Would you be willing to help support by donating product or funds
? We are looking for partners that can offer supplies, cash, and support in our efforts to continue to rebuild Puerto Rico. In return, we will make sure your brand is mentioned on all materials sent to the media and we will have photographer (Getty) documenting the entire effort and you are welcome to use those as you wish. Our PR team can also connect and collaborate with you directly as they will be doing appropriate outreach.

We’re doing boots on the ground efforts to help those affected, and together we’ll make a real difference, please join us by donating at or emailing us at
