Warm Yourself Up With City Winery’s Mullin’ It Over Recipe

As the weather gets cooler, you’ll need a cocktail that heats up! One of our favorite warm, seasonal drinks is mulled wine. Check out our recipe below and find out more about this delicious drink.

Mullin’ It Over Ingredients

  • 1 btl dry red wine
  • 1 orange, zested
  • 8 dried cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 dried star anise
  • 4 Tbsp honey
  • 4 oz. brandy
Add all ingredients to stockpot and heat over low.  Be careful not to boil.  Continue simmering for at least 30 minutes.  Strain and serve garnished with an orange slice and cinnamon stick.  This recipe works great in a crock pot!


1. What is mulled wine? 

– A warm/hot beverage made with red wine along with fruit, fruit juice, sugar, mulling spices such as cinnamon, clove, star anise, and sometimes raisins. It’s name differs depending on where you live. In Sweden it’s referred to as Glogg, In France it’s call Vin Chaud and it is called Glüwein in Germany.

2.  What does it taste like? 

– Mulled wine is sweeter and fruitier compared to regular wine and has a nice warming baking spice flavor due to the added components.

3. And why is it a holiday tradition?

– The Romans began heating up their wine in the 2nd century as a way to stay warm during the winter months. Eventually, Europeans began to add baking spices to the mixture because they believed it would promote health and prevent disease. This method spread over the world and each culture has a slightly different variation. It wasn’t until the 1890s that it was associated with Christmas.

4. What are the steps to making mulled wine?

- Start with your base red wine and bring it to a simmer.
- Next, add your citrus typically oranges but you can add lemons or limes.
- Add your choice of assorted spices in their whole form.
- Add in your sweetener. Normally, you would use white sugar but you can use maple syrup or honey.
- Then, you can add your favorite liqueur for added flavor. (This step is optional.)
- Simmer for at least 15 minutes and up to 4 hours. After straining out the fruit and spices, serve warm.
